Have you ever looked at a street sign, and wondered to yourself, who designed it, who thought of such a design? Maybe even at your school you've seen posters for the newest club, play or game. All of the elements used to create the sign, the poster, or book cover, were made by graphic design. Graphic design is literally used in almost every single aspect of daily life. To first understand what graphic design is, you have to know the blanket definition for it.
Graphic design is all about using words and images to put meaning to a certain message. Graphic design is not only just a concept, it's life! When picking out a box of cereal, would you rather go for a colorful, and quirky box or the bland and gray one? Probably the colorful one right? Well since most advertisers know this, they try to market vibrant and colorful products.

TYPOGRAPHY
One of the many aspects of Graphic design are being able to create typography. Typography is being able to use words to conduct or convey an image. Example one is very good example for typography. It shows the common phrase "You Blow Me Away," on a sheet of shattering glass. It is visually entertaining and makes you think about what the story is around the glass.

Example Two |
Example two is just as visually stunning. It pictures a man, almost exploding with words. Thoughts and memories, all protruding from the man. All the while he is staring off into space and thinking. It almost makes you think, "What could he be thinking about?" or even, "What is he staring at with such an intensity?" Making the consumer (customer) think about these things while buying a product is an important part of graphic design. While designing a project, you have to ask yourself if the end product is something you yourself would buy. If so, you definitely have a keeper. :)

COLOR THEORY
A different, but equally important ingredient for Graphic design is "Color Theory." It is basically the art of mixing colors and making things more visually interesting by making specific color combinations. Looking at color wheels such as example three, if you were to choose any color on the wheel, the go to color on the opposite side of the wheel. It's probably a good combination with the color you chose, right? This is called "Opposite Attraction" If you look at logos and images around you, most of them will follow this rule.

So know that you have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of graphic design, the very last thing you will ever need to know about it, is to always, always, ALWAYS, make it unique, and quirky, or sleek and special. Make it something you would buy yourself, and be sure to make it visually exhilarating, but still keep it simple.
